You could prop on a sex pillow under your belly and hips during doggy style, for example, if your arm muscles or wrists start to tucker out from holding up your own weight, she says. Or, ask your partner to pull one under their hips while you perform cunnilingus or analingus to save your neck. You could also prop one up under your lover’s bum when you’re boning in the missionary position, says Kenneth Play, an international sex educator and sex hacker. “Changing the angle of one person’s pelvis makes a big difference,” he says. Angling a pelvis upwards, for example, can enable some deliciously deep penetration, as well as G-spot stimulation.”
Additionally, sex pillows free up your hands, since you no longer have to hold up your partner and can make oral sex much more pleasurable, too. “With the hips raised, the genitals are at eye level, making oral sex better as no one gets a tired neck,” says Taylor Sparks, an erotic educator and founder of Organic Loven. (Speaking of hands-free action, there are even sex pillows with holes to insert a vibrator or dildo.)
While it’s a no-brainer that you should add a sex pillow to your sex toy collection, which sex pillow that should be isn’t quite so straightforward. After all, sex pillows come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and weight limits. To make it easy for you, we put together this list of the best sex pillows, each highlighted for the quality that makes it stand out.
What to Consider
Filling
There are two types of sex pillows: foam and inflatable. Made from a dense foam that can withstand your body weight, foam sex pillows excel at supporting the weight of but multiple people, no matter their body weight or size. However, they can also be big and bulky, which can take up a lot of space in a small bedroom.
Inflatable pillows, on the other hand, are much less dense. They can still provide plenty of support, but usually they are less optimal for large bodies and group sex. Unlike bulky wedge or ramp sex pillows, however, inflatable pillows can be deflated and put away in storage. They’re great for travel to help spice things up on your next vacation.
Case
“Most sex pillows come outfitted with a waterproof case, so you don’t have to worry about getting lubricant or body fluids on them,” says Carly S. Others, however, zip-off slips that can be easily thrown into the washing machine. While easy clean-up is always a win. It’s especially important if you’re into water sports, your or your partner(s) squirt, if you’re planning to use the same sex pillow with multiple partners.
Shape
“Sex pillows come in a range of shapes and sizes,” says Carly S. Some even come with multiple parts that you can custom-arrange based on which body parts you need supported within different positions, she explains.
The shape of the sex pillow hugely influences which positions it will benefit, she says. While longer ramps are optimal for doggy style, shorter wedges work better for lifting your hips for oral sex. Meanwhile, spherical and cylindrical options are generally best for supporting the receiver’s lower back during missionary.
“Some pillows even come with an opening that you can insert a sex toy into, allowing you to engage in some hands-free pleasure,” says Carly S. These options are optimal for solo sex, as well as for from-behind position.
Size
“You really want to think about the size of your body in relation to the size of the pillow that you’re shopping for,” says Carly S. If you’re between a smaller size and larger option, she suggests going bigger. “When I first bought a sex pillow, I didn’t think I needed the bigger size because I could fit on the standard pillow,” she explains. “However, if I’m not exactly in the middle of that pillow I’d roll to the side and have to support my weight which totally defeats the purpose.”

What makes a sex pillow so special? The main difference between a sex pillow and a standard pillow is the height and angle. Regular pillows are soft and allow your head to sink in, whereas sex pillows are more firm and designed to keep you propped up and in one place to hit that *perfect* spot and hopefully result in an orgasm (or multiple). Sex pillows are also angled to make sex more comfortable and pleasurable by providing support for different parts of the body so all you have to focus on is embracing the full spectrum of sexual pleasure.
“Sex pillows are great for reducing pain, and increasing pleasure,” says Al Fine, founder and CEO of Dame. “They help adjust the angels in genital and body interaction, and provide support. It’s like how being in a supported bridge in yoga is very different from being in an active bridge: same idea!”
What does a sex wedge pillow do?
Put simply, they reduce pain while increasing pleasure, says Fine. “They provide support and help adjust the angles during genital and body interaction, and provide support,” they explain. Basically, sex pillows are yoga blocks for, well, another kind of acrobatics.
