Woolroom Deluxe Organic Washable Wool Baby/Travel Pillow
£37 at Amazon £37 at Amazon Read review Show more The best toddler pillows are designed specifically with little heads and necks in mind, safe to use and, of course, comfortable. While each child will have their own opinion on what makes a good pillow, these are the ones that really impressed during testing:
-
Top pick: The Panda Memory Foam Toddler Bamboo Pillow was a clear favourite. Providing the ideal firmness, excellent breathability and coming with its own bamboo pillowcase, it’s hard to fault.
-
Runner-up: Coming in at just £11.99, the Silentnight Safe Nights Breathable Anti-allergy Cot Bed Pillow offers great features — in particular the super-breathable mesh sides — at a truly budget price.
-
I also loved: If your budget can stretch, the Woolroom Organic Washable Wool Baby/Travel Pillow really is pure luxury for your toddler. I really rate the sustainability and natural materials, not to mention the comfort.
Sarah DawsonI tested a range of toddler pillows for my Women’s Health roundup, along with the help of a two-and-a-bit-year-old who trialled these during nap times.
I looked at how comfortable each pillow seemed, the materials they were made from (particularly looking to see if these are natural, sustainable or organic) and how easy each pillow was to wash and dry.
I also considered the thickness and age-suitability of each toddler pillow, alongside whether they offered longevity of use and value for money. Testing each of these using a traditional-size toddler pillowcase (unless they came with their own), I was able to put my list of best-rated pillows together.
As I’ve said, all toddlers are different — so, for a well-rounded review, I checked out broader consumer feedback and user review comments.
Finally, to help guide you, I spoke to Rosey Davidson, founder and CEO of infant sleep consultancy Just Chill Baby Sleep, for her tips on what to look for when buying a toddler pillow. I also consulted chiropractor Dean Blackstock, a father-of-three and clinic owner with over 20 years’ clinical experience, for his advice on choosing the right pillow for your toddler’s health and development. Finally, to get essential advice on safe sleeping, I spoke to Jenny Ward, CEO of The Lullaby Trust, about how to safely introduce a toddler pillow.

Absolutely not — it’s very unsafe. As Jenny Ward from The Lullaby Trust explains, ‘The most important thing to remember is that babies don’t need pillows. Pillows increase the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) by 2.5 times. They also increase the risk of suffocation, as babies aren’t strong enough yet to move a pillow away if it obstructs their breathing.’
The advice regarding safe sleeping for babies under 12 months is very clear: just use a firm, flat, waterproof mattress and tightly fitting sheet. Don’t put anything in their cot, including pillows or soft toys.
It’s crucial to follow safe sleeping guidelines when introducing a pillow to your toddler. ‘Pillows are not suitable for children under 12 months, due to the risk of suffocation,’ explains Rosey Davidson. ‘Once your child is over 12 months, it’s safe to consider a pillow if they seem to need one. That said, most toddlers don’t need a pillow until after age two or even three — and many are happy and comfortable without one well into the preschool years. You may also find they often don’t use it, or stay on it!’
Jenny Ward adds, ‘If your baby was born prematurely (before 37 weeks) or with low birth weight (less than 5.5 pounds at birth), follow safer sleep advice (including no pillows) for 12 months from their due date, rather than when they were born.’
There’s no exact science to when a toddler is ready for a pillow; it’s all down to watching their cues. ‘Some signs your toddler (over 12 months) may be ready for a pillow are that they try to rest their head on soft toys, blankets or cushions during sleep, they complain of being uncomfortable or they’re unsettled during the night,’ says Davidson. ‘Even then, it’s not essential, and if your child sleeps well without a pillow, there’s no need to introduce one.’
No, 100% not — it’s dangerous to give a toddler an adult pillow, again because of the risk of suffocation. If you want to buy a pillow for your child, it must be one designed for their age group.
‘Compared to adult pillows, toddler pillows offer better support, breathability and safety, as they’re typically smaller and thinner and offer better alignment for their spines,’ explains Dean Blackstock. ‘From a chiropractor’s perspective, a good quality toddler pillow can make quite a difference to a toddler’s health and development, maintaining the natural curves of the spine and supporting the soft tissues as they grow.’
Here are some important factors to consider when shopping for the right pillow for your toddler.
-
Size: Toddler pillows come in various sizes, but typically are around 60cm x 40cm. The main consideration is thickness. While the thinner pillows are useful as an introductory first toddler pillow, Dean Blackstock suggests looking for pillows that are 5cm to 7cm thick ‘to allow for neck alignment without causing strain or discomfort and disturbing your toddler’s sleep.’
-
Firmness: ‘Just like Goldilocks’ porridge, pillows should be not too firm, not too soft, but just right!’ explains Blackstock. ‘A good check is to see if the pillow holds its shape when you apply pressure to it: it shouldn’t remain dented.’ Some toddlers prefer firmer pillows, while others like softer ones, so go with what they feel most comfortable with and what allows them to sleep well.
-
Safety features: ‘As well as making sure you purchase a toddler-sized pillow, ensure that the pillow you’re purchasing conforms to safety standards,’ advises Jenny Ward. ‘Safety standards tell us that products have passed certain tests, such as making sure it will not easily catch fire. The British Safety Standard code to look out for on any packaging or a seller’s website for infant pillows is BS 1877-8:1974.’
-
Hypoallergenic features: Look for toddler pillows that offer breathability through the choice of fabrics: bamboo and organic cotton are ideal. It’s also worth choosing hypoallergenic pillows to ensure they’re safe for toddlers with sensitive skin or allergies.
-
Washing: This is toddlers we’re talking about, so choose a pillow that is easy to wash or one where you can buy multiple covers to chuck in the washing machine. If convenience is key, look for a toddler pillow that can be tumble-dried, so you don’t have to wait around for it to air dry.
